Hornet or Wasp, What's the difference?

Looking back at our Saturday, it seems a bit of a stinker actually.  Although we got started early, took care of the usual with the Hooligans, sold 4 of the young roosters and fixed AGAIN the roof on the Tiki Hut, I feel like we didn’t get much done.   It took us most of the morning through early afternoon to get these chores completed.  I’m not sure if it was due to the heat, or just lack of overall energy.   I did find the time to get stung by a hornet/wasp.  On my left arm and it is still red, swollen and itchy today.  Cortisone 10 does not help!
Even though it seems we didn’t have a huge list of things to get accomplished, it didn’t change how tired and sore we were after we left.   So, not much to report at The Compound.  But I'm sure we'll come up with a few more projects in the very near future.  Like finishing the outside of the outdoor oven, and starting our fall seedlings for the garden.

  1. This seems to explain it.

All hornets are wasps, but not all wasps are hornets.

    2. You can try some Benedryl, but unless you are used to the side effects it will make you very sleepy and possibly dizzy. Read the label....

you can try the liquid version to avoid taking so much just to see if it helps, then if it does you can try a little more.

    3. Matt,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I have Benedryl, but it knocks me out. I'm better today, but the reaction was strange because I was just stung by a hornet in the face of all places just a couple of months ago, and had no reaction at all. Go figure..

    4. and I'm concerned with this that the next time you get stung you may very well end up in the hospital with anaphyalactic shock like sista.

Many times with this type of envenomation, it gets worse each time.

It might be worth seeing a doctor, and they might send you home with an epi-pen to prevent you from going into shock.

    5. My sister in law is a nurse, I'll be making a call to her and seek some advice. Not something I need to deal with that's for sure.

    6. Matt,

Also, it's nice to have friends that care, even if we've never met. Right now, it means a lot.. I'll explain in the next few days.

  2. When our son-in-law was attacked by hornets, true hornets, he called immediately in so much pain that we drove the THIRTY MILES to his cabin in the woods with: Peroxide, Baking Soda and meat tenderizer.

I flung the baking soda (Arm and Hammer) on him, poured the peroxide, and when the bubbling (and screaming) stopped, I applied meat tenderizer to the stings. It immediately helped a little. About two hours later he was turning human again. The long range effect had been short circuited.

I don't understand your delayed response, unless you neglected to mention the initial feeling of being shot with nails.

    1. My response to the actual sting was immediate, but it only hurt right at the sting site. I put it in cold water and that helped right away. Still stung a bit, but the full on pain was not there. I'm just weird I guess.

  3. Hornets are just the largest of the wasps.

    2. Yes they do ! In fact I've only ever been stung by a wasp, never by a honey bee.
We've currently got a huge swarm of honey bees under the eves of our house. Debating what to do about them...not really bothering anything, yet don't really want them filling the attic with honey lol

    3. Spud, there's someone who would want those bees and would take them off your hands. If I had another hive, I'd come and get them. I'd hate to see them destroyed. If I can find anything I'll let you know. Things are crazy at the moment, of which I hope to explain when I'm up to it. It's not good.

  4. Ugggg! Last time I was stung by a hornet I ended up in the emergency room with anaphyalactic shock. It's been a while but I keep benedryl on hand just in case and the rest of the time I run and look like an idiot.

    1. Oh Great, I'm sure that was a fun time! I don't have that kind of reaction, thank goodness.
