Gardening on My Mind

Well the pigs have done their job.  They have completely removed any bit of weed or grass from anywhere in the garden, and it's not growing back.  Wonderful little tillers, and fertilizers.

Now the true test will be, will the weeds come back and if so how quickly?   Considering the property is completely surrounded by weeds, it'll be interesting to see how well they did and/or how long it is before the weeds to take over.  I pray they don't.  Weeds are a big pain in any garden, but out at The Compound, totally impossible to get any control over by hand.

So we'll start on seedlings this weekend, along with the initial tilling of an area in the garden.  We're also interested in seeing how well the garden does, considering all the fertilizer that has been added along the way.

That's at least what's on my agenda.  The Moose has other plans, stay tuned....

  1. I'm curious about the weeds coming back as well. One of our problems, at either house, it the birds tend to help spread weeds & other things around as well.

    1. I'm sure we have our share of birds sending in seed missiles too! It will be interesting to watch.

  2. Izzy,

It's great to have pigs or other critters help with getting rid of the weeds in your garden areas. I hate having to pull, and dig weeds before starting preparation for the garden. What type of vegetables or fruits will you plant in this area?

    1. We're staring with cool weather veggies; cabbage, beets, broccoli, and I'm going to throw in some tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, lettuce and possible potatoes along the way too.

  3. Weeds. Seems they appear from no where despite our best attempts to keep them at bay. We're still far too chilly and damp here to work our soil, although our hens have had free run of the vegetable garden since we closed it early in fall. They do an amazing job of clearing the beds, but it seems that no matter what we do, weeds grow. Will look forward to hearing how your garden grows after your hogs have done their tilling. :)

Happy new year, Izzy! Thanks for commenting after my long time away from my blog!

    1. Happy New Year to you too Lisa! I enjoy following along with your blog.

Hopefully the pigs have done enough of a job that I may get a nice break from pulling weeds as the garden progresses.

  4. I am so glad to hear this. I'm currently working on a gardening unreport about the same thing. It's amazing what great little tillers pigs are!
