Another Snake Episode - Enough Already!

We had another snake episode at The Compound recently.  Hunter, the resident guard dog (he really only guards his owner, the rest of us he doesn't like) had a cotton mouth actually come into his area and after they decided they were not going to get along, the snake bit him on the nose.  Only one fang, but it hit a vein and traveled really quick.

He was to the emergency room within about 30 minutes for his anti-venom treatment.  The vet did state, should this have happened when no one was there, he would have been dead in less than 2 hours.

Over a thousand dollars spent and two days later, he was back to his surly self.

Snake sightings have really increased at The Compound this summer.  I think it may be due to the excessive rain, and we're heading into mating season so everyone's wearing their snake boots!

  1. Reminds me of our dog, I have never seen her mess with a snake though she was after a bee this morning so I don't hold out much hope of her staying away from them.

    1. Even Miss Izzy, who was bit by a pigmy last year will still take a look at a snake! You'd think they'd learn.

  2. Izzy,

Ouch hefty vet bill but glad to hear Hunter is doing better. Yes, the rain and heat will bring the snakes out. We always have shovels conveniently stationed just for snakes.

    1. We pretty much carry them around anyway, as it seems all we ever do is shovel!

  3. We have had to put breather tubes in horse nostrils because of snake bite before. The venom itself won't usually kill a horse as they are too big but they can swell up their necks and nostrils to where they don't breath.

    I hate snakes....

Glad Hunter survived. I have a special place in my heart for surly old critters :)

    1. I'm such a city girl, I'm not sure I'd have the fortitude to put breather tubes in a horse's nostrils.

We're glad he survived too, even if he's surly.

  4. Scarey stuff! Glad the dog is ok and thankful it was not one of you all that got bit...We have not seen one poisonous snake here in the past 2 summers...we find copperhead skins, but no snakes...Can't say it disappoints me any...LOL! Stay safe, keep calm and keep the boots on!

    1. I wouldn't be disappointed either if they didn't make an appearance. I'm getting better at recognizing the good snakes from the bad, either way they give me the creeps.

  5. Snake boots? What are snake boots? argggge I couldn't do it. I will stay in the pacific northwest where we don't have anything more poisonous than a hornet.

    1. They actually make snake boots, they have a strongly woven waterproof fabric that their fangs can not penetrate. They run up to your knees. They come in either black or camo, lace up the front or have side zippers. Much like snow boots, without the insulation. We're getting used to wearing them.... unfortunately.
