What are you Feeding Your Chickens?

Here's an interesting article for the chicken lovers that follow this blog and for those of you who care about what you eat.  Does it ever end?

I'm going to be reviewing the ingredient list of my feed.  I may have to really consider making my own.  I know there are some recipes out there, any success stories?

  1. 20+ years ago my husband and I worked in a hatchery for a major commericial chicken company...It's where we met actually...anyway, I knew way back then about the arsenic, steroids and other not so good ingredients in chicken feed...The commerical feed is actually worse than what you purchase and feed your backyard flock...couple this with the fact commercial hen houses feed a constant supply of antibiotics and it spells disaster...It is time folks wake up and realize our food is killing us...My chickens free range, get table scraps, hen scratch and a little bit of laying crumbles....free range is their main diet.

    1. It's amazing, how the govt tells us 32 oz sodas being banned is for the public good/health, but feeding livestock we eventually consume poison, and modifying our plants is still just fine.

  2. Ya'll know what I think. Free range is all they really need. With a bit of supplement. Kind of hard to do till someone is living there full time tho...

    1. Yep, I think that's why we spend as much as we do on fresh greens and veggies for them. If we could let them free range daily, we would definately do it. See you Sat.
