(From our friends at Wikipedia) Survivalism is a movement of individuals or groups (called survivalists or preppers) who are actively preparing for emergencies, including possible disruptions in social or political order, on scales from local to international. Survivalists often acquire emergency medical and self-defense training, stockpile food and water, prepare to become self-sufficient, and build structures (e.g., a survival retreat or an underground shelter) that may help them survive a catastrophe.
Why do you prep really? I agree with the definition, and yes I do most of these things. However, and foremost, here is my real reason.
I don't want to end up on the dark side. Too many sheeple are already there, just watch the morning news. I don't want to be that person that feels compelled to lie, cheat or steal the necessities in life to survive. I don't want to deal with the temptation that comes from fear, or lack of food, water, etc. If people are pushed into a corner the part of the DNA that leans towards being animalistic will rear it's ugly head. I believe it'll be tough enough, and the life I know will no longer exist. I really, really don't want to go there.
I think that's what bothers me the most about what's going to happen. I'm not actually that concerned about the outcome of this economical and political nonsense. I know where that's leading and I know it's going to happen. I'm more concerned about our ability to follow the principles God has laid out, once faced with the catastrophe that lies ahead. Our
That's why we do what we do, prepare as much and the best that we can so we can avoid those living on the dark side as much as possible. But, I also know that God always makes something good out of the bad. I am not left hopeless or without comfort. My future, our future is about so much more, way more.
If you haven't yet read The Hiding Place, by Corrie ten Boom. It's worth the read. You'll understand humanity in the face of crisis; good and bad.
Prepared and not scared....is a good motto
ReplyDeletePerfectly stated!
DeleteIzzy,
DeleteI have to agree with you, and Mamma Bear.
We must keep moving along!!!
Just began a page on my blog about this very topic...I have not finished it...I think many(most) people misunderstand the word survivalism...A couple years ago I had an online group for these topics...and I noticed when you used the word survivalist, survivalism, survival etc...the folks I was involved with got really ugly and it was VERY clear they did not understand it and truly believed the age old thing about some creepy guy living in the woods shooting at anything that moved...I totally agree its way more than 'prepping'..I always say survivalist are preppers on massive steroids...LOL...and imho self sufficient living encompasses all aspects of prepping and survivalism...its the best of the best!
ReplyDeleteThank you and look forward to reading your post.
DeleteHi Izzy, I actually made a page for this topic, you can find it along the top tabs! Look forward to hearing your thoughts!
DeleteAn interesting take. Prepping as salvation as self sufficiency helps resist the temptation to play by the current rules of the game.
ReplyDeleteI can see that actually and it makes sense in many ways.
Thank you. I believe temptation is easier to give in to than doing the right things, especially in a time of crisis. Why not create an environment where the influences either don't exist or are limited.
DeleteHi Izzy,
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and am glad to find this post, along with a few others I have read. You are right. Living the way we do is a life style not an action, and that life style will help us in the long run. We're all going to need as many skills and as much knowledge as we can muster when the time comes. Best of luck to you and yours.
Blessings,
Fern
The temptation that comes from fear... Well said, Izzy. A generation or two ago, my grandparents, for instance, knew how to raise and butcher a chicken. They had a well-stocked pantry because that's just the way people lived. The had skills that people today can't even imagine (well, peeps like us can!) since they walk around all day staring into their smart phones trying to keep up with all the non-news, etc. Sorry for going on about this, but you are so, so right about the future! :) Yes, the Hiding Place...one of my favorite books. So filled with faith that overcomes evil and darkness!
