Eviction Notice

He's being evicted!

How he actually got in here is a mystery.  He had to, not only find the place, he had to get through two electrified fences!  There's a vast amount of space in the FL swamps, so he can make his home somewhere else!

It was one of those weekends where you could have fried an egg on the sidewalk!

The Moose mowed down the garden (forgot to get photos), but it was basically a jungle. That is NOT an overstatement or exaggeration. Many of the weeds were taller than my 5’5” height! He suffered as a result, got dizzy and started losing feeling in his jaw. Heat stroke was looming. Some bottles of water and a head dunk under cold water really helped!

We had some other projects that the guys all worked on, and needless to say their t-shirts all hung low, and it was a good thing it was outdoors, or we girls would have fainted from their smell!

Other important news: We received a phone call late Sunday from one of the guys who is watching our property. They found a 2-1/2 foot gator in our Tilapia pond! How on earth it got in there is a conundrum. The pond is inside a fenced in area, with chicken wire along the bottom 2’. The pond is covered by plastic fencing as well, to keep out the previous band of renegade Egrets! We’ll be doing a walk around to see if an area or two has been breached. I’d rather not feed the local wildlife Tilapia from our pond. I figure, the area is pretty much a swamp or scrub brush, very native environment. They ate from the surrounding area before we came on the scene, they can continue to eat somewhere else!

It's Sunday morning and temperatures are anywhere from 10-15 degrees cooler than yesterday, and does it feel wonderful! It won't last long, but it's a very nice break as we haven't had temperatures this cool since May.

If you haven't had a chance to visit MDR's blog at the Modern Day Redneck, (his link is on the left side of my blog) than you are missing out. (MDR - I hope you feel better soon!) We've been following each others antics for some time now, and recently he posted the following link:

It's very interesting, and I learned a lot, and not just about gardening. The Moose and I decided we're going to give it a try, as we are continually trying to alter the soil, dealing with too much or too little water, too much or too little nutrient levels, etc. It's been a struggle. Not to mention removing weeds, which out at the Compound are never in short supply. We also want to get away from using fertilizers, and soil amendments.

So we headed over to our local landfill, and picked up our first load of mulch. We don't have wood chips here, and the mulch is free so that's what we'll be working with. That's as far as we got. We'll put it in gear next weekend.

We did finish the screened in deck! We couldn't be happier!

Here's the shower/greenhouse area;

Sherman (resident 12-14' gator) was no where to be seen. The Hooligan's are doing well, and I avoided them when possible, so no attacks by the General.

We're taking the day off from the Compound, but do have some actual business work to take care of this afternoon. After a little shopping with daughter number 1. Have a good week everyone! Thanks for following along on our adventures.

I'm Seeing Green

Well the Moose had another epiphany! What will become our outdoor shower on the back of the camper and deck, will also be a greenhouse for the cooler months! I'm anxious to give it a whirl this coming November and December. We have a few things to take care of, but as you can see by the photo, we're almost there!

I'll do a bit of research regarding temperatures and humidity, but I think we are well on our way. We have roll down blinds for the sides (when we shower), and are coming up with a plan for the doorway.

We spent the first part of our day on Saturday cleaning up an old UGLY, I mean UGLY shed that we got along the way. Actually we wanted the patio blocks, and had to take the shed to get them. So anyway, there it sat for over a year. What an eyesore!

The Moose decided to just use just the roof and scrap the sides. We put the roof on our old outdoor shower, and will close off the bottom to create a shed to house our gasoline and lawnmowers. It was as if the shower was built for this purpose. A few minor adjustments by the Moose, and it's good to go...

We had every intention of completing the screening of our deck on Saturday, but just ran out of time. We're 90% done, and should get it all done next weekend. Which by the way, is supposed to be down to 86 degrees! We can hardly wait to see what that feels like. It was another weekend of heat indexes in the lower 100's.

The only other thing to mention is the roaring sound we heard from "Sherman" the gator in our canal. It's amazing how loud they can be. Most of the year you hear absolutely nothing out of them, but this guy (or girl) was really belting it out! The gators pretty much left us alone this weekend, so no worries on that front.

Have a good week everyone, and thanks to those that recently became followers. I appreciate your support and look forward to reading your comments.
