I can safely say the chicken molt at The Compound is officially over! We're back up to nearly 9 dozen eggs a week! We got down to a low of around 3 dozen, but in the last few weeks, they've all hit high gear again!
We have between 30 and 35 hens in total. Some of our hens are older and not laying nearly as many as before, as this is year 2 for some. So the girls lay between 3 and 4 eggs each per week. Not as good as some of the Red Buff breeds, but good enough for us!
Looking forward to hatching out a new generation later this spring.
FYI - Walter is doing fine. A bit hen-pecked, but holding his own. He was glad to see me!
Izzy,
ReplyDeleteGood news about the moulting. Now it's time to produce more eggs :-)
I'm happy to hear Walter is settling in well.
Yes, it's all good news. We need that once and awhile, to offset the challenges of life.
DeleteWell that's good news!!! Be sure and do an update on how you keep those chicks alive,
ReplyDeleteI'll have to think about an article on how we keep the chicks alive. Thanks for the advice and for taking the time to comment.
